Factor IX is a protein naturally produced in the body which helps your blood to clot.
A lack of factor IX can cause uncontrolled bleeding, as the blood is unable to clot properly. Factor IX complex is used to help prevent or control bleeding problems to those who have a condition called haemophilia B (a disorder characterised by a low level of factor IX in the body).
Factor IX complex may be used to treat other conditions as decided by your doctor.
Factor IX complex is to be given intravenously (into the vein) via a drip. It is delivered directly into the bloodstream via the blood vessel.
Your doctor or nurse will administer this medicine for you.
The dose of Factor IX complex will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with your doctor so that you do not miss any doses. Your doctor also needs to regularly monitor your response to Factor IX complex.
If you miss an appointment or miss an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- blood clot disorder or at risk of blood clot problems
- liver disease
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant.
If you are going for or had underwent an operation (including minor surgery), inform your doctor.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to regularly monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. Routine tests (e.g. levels of factor IX, blood clotting tests) may be needed while you are being treated with this medicine. Your doctor will advise you about how often you need to have these tests.
Factor IX complex may cause drowsiness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects include any of the following: headache, nausea, vomiting, flushing, tiredness, fever, chills, and burning or tingling sensation at the injection site.
If you develop rashes, breathlessness, swollen mouth or eyes, inform your doctor quickly. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any of the following:
- signs and symptoms of formation of blood clots in the blood vessels e.g. numbness or weakness in one side of your body, difficulty speaking or thinking, loss of balance, changes in your vision
- swelling, warmth, numbness, change in color or pain in your extremities
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
